Brief Introduction and Objectives of the Uttar Pradesh State Archives
The establishment of the Uttar Pradesh State Archives took place in 1949 as the Central Records Office within the Education Department's office in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. It was allocated a separate building at 53 Mahatma Gandhi Marg, Allahabad, in 1951. In July 1973, the Uttar Pradesh State Archives was relocated to its newly constructed building (B-44, Mahanagar Extension, Lucknow). The expansion of the Uttar Pradesh State Archives in Lucknow began in 1973. In 1973, the Regional Archives and State Manuscript Library, Allahabad, were established. In 1976, the Regional Archives, Varanasi, were established. In 1977, the Regional Archives, Nainital, were established, and in 1980, the Regional Archives, Agra, and Dehradun were established. The Regional Archives in Nainital and Dehradun are currently located in the state of Uttarakhand. The Uttar Pradesh State Archives have been preserving records since 1803 and have records obtained through personal rights dating back to 1540.
Its main objectives are as follows:-
- The transfer of important historical and administrative records available in various departments, divisional and district offices, and semi-governmental institutions of the Uttar Pradesh government is aimed at preserving and centralizing these records for better management, accessibility, and preservation of historical and administrative information.
- To ensure the appropriate scientific conservation of transferred records.
- Providing assistance to research students for their research work.
- Facilitating the reproduction of records through reprography services.
- Obtaining rare manuscripts, documents, records, and books protected by personal rights and ensuring their scientific conservation.
- Providing information to the government as per their requirements.
- Providing training to the record room in-charges and subordinate staff of the district magistrate offices in compliance with the Archives Policy-1990.
- Providing guidance and advice to departments/offices regarding all processes related to the maintenance of records.
- Evaluating the significance and historical value of records.
