The National Kathak Institute, Lucknow, was established in the year 1988-1989 as an autonomous institution under the Department of Culture. The institute's objectives are to document the traditions of various Kathak gharanas at the national level, encourage young talent, preserve the legacy of senior artists, and promote Kathak dance. The primary objective of establishing the institute is to provide education in Kathak and to organize performances at the national level. Since 1999, the institute has been operating independently from its office at 27/3, Kaiserbagh. Since then, the institute has been organizing workshops, the annual Kathak festival, and programs such as Rasrang and Runjhun. Kathak performances have been held in various cities including Allahabad, Pratapgarh, Faizabad, Delhi, Jaipur, Jhansi, Meerut, Balrampur, and Chitrakoot. Along with these activities, since 2001, the institute has been organizing monthly Kathak evenings. Approximately 300 students are currently receiving Kathak training at the institute in Hobby Courses, Prathama, Madhyama, Visharad Pratham, and Visharad Dvitiya levels.
