The Uttar Pradesh State Lalit Kala Akademi was established on February 8, 1962, as a fully-funded autonomous unit under the Department of Culture, Government of Uttar Pradesh. Dr. Sampurnanand, the then Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, was appointed as its first chairman. The academy's office is located in the historic Lal Baradari monument. The Lal Baradari building was constructed between 1778 and 1814 for the coronation ceremonies of the Nawabs of Awadh.
