Major Action Plans and Responsibilities

Major Activities Undertaken by the Uttar Pradesh State Archaeology Department  

Maintenance Work –

  1. Under the annual maintenance activities, chemical conservation and cleaning work was carried out for the following state-protected monuments: –
  • Shukla Talab, Kanpur, Guptar Ghat Temple, Ayodhya, Wazirganj Baradari, Gonda, Hulas Kheda, Mohanlalganj, Lucknow, Medhak Temple, Lakhimpur Kheri, Kardameshwar Mahadev Temple, Varanasi, Govardhan Chhatris, Mathura, Sant Kabir Das Samadhi, Maghar, Sant Kabir Nagar, Uday Singh’s Court, Sasni, Hathras, Baruasagar Fort, Jhansi
  1. Under the annual maintenance activities, gate construction, wire fencing, boundary wall construction, and repairs were carried out for the following state-protected monuments : –
  • Roshan-ud-Daula Kothi, Lucknow, Guru Dham Temple, Varanasi, Sarnath Temple, Larwak, Mirzapur, Kusumvan Sarovar, Mathura, Ras Khan Samadhi, Gokul, Mathura, Sarai Nahar Rai, Pratapgarh, Valmiki Ashram, Kanpur, Akbar's Hunting Lodge, Kirawali, Agra, Radhunath Rao’s Palace, Jhansi, Sonkh, Mathura.
  1. A Culture information board was installed at the state-protected monument Kusumvan Sarovar.

1857 Cataloging/Documentation of Temples Pre-dating

Under the cataloging of temples predating 1857, the following temples have been documented: 124 temples in Ayodhya district, 258 temples in Varanasi, 41 temples in Mirzapur, 14 temples in Sonbhadra, 17 temples in Jaunpur, 9 temples in Agra, 35 temples in Kanpur, 11 temples in Kannauj, 32 temples in Lucknow, 110 temples in Jhansi, 64 temples in Lalitpur, 107 temples in Mahoba, 25 temples in Chitrakoot, 37 temples in Banda, 32 temples in Prayagraj, 14 temples in Kaushambi, 22 temples in Fatehpur, 35 temples in Pratapgarh, 15 temples in Sant Ravidas Nagar, 20 temples in Barabanki, 53 temples in Gorakhpur, 54 temples in Vrindavan, 39 temples in Mathura, 46 temples in Bahraich, In total, 1,297 temples have been cataloged to date.

Survey Work –

  1. In the year 2019-20, a village-level archaeological survey was conducted along the banks of the Sai River in Pratapgarh district, covering the area from Mustafabad to Bhagatpur. During this survey, 21 archaeological sites were uncovered. The findings included terracotta beads, terracotta coins, seals, pottery, and sculptures. Based on the recovered artifacts, these sites are estimated to date from the Mauryan period to the early medieval period.
  2. In the year 2019-20, a village-level archaeological survey was conducted in the Nawabganj development block of the Tarabganj tehsil in Gonda district. This survey revealed 25 archaeological sites. Artifacts discovered at these sites included pottery, female terracotta figurines, a jhāva (screen rubber), and temple remnants. Based on the recovered artifacts, these sites are estimated to date from around 800 BCE to the early medieval period.
  3. In the year 2019-20, a village-level archaeological survey was conducted in the Kerakat tehsil of Jaunpur district. More than 40 archaeological sites were uncovered during this survey. Based on the pottery, artifacts, statues, and architectural remains found at these sites, the time period of these sites is estimated to range from around 1000 BCE to the 18th century CE.
  4. In the year 2019-20, a village-level archaeological survey was conducted in the Baberu tehsil of Banda district. This survey revealed 40 archaeological sites. Artifacts discovered at these sites included pottery, terracotta beads, stone beads, Brahmi-script inscriptions on sealing, and temple remnants. Based on the recovered artifacts, the time period of these sites is estimated to range from around 600 BCE to the early medieval period.
  5. In the year 2019-20, a village-level archaeological survey was conducted in the Gohand development block of Hamirpur district. This survey uncovered 48 archaeological sites. Artifacts discovered at these sites included pottery, terracotta beads, stone tools, fragments of door frames, lac bangles, and statues of Vishnu and Hanuman. Based on the recovered artifacts, the time period of these sites is estimated to range from around 300 BCE to the early medieval period.
  6. In the Sant Kabir Nagar district, a village-level archaeological survey was conducted in the Santha development block. This survey uncovered 20 archaeological sites. Artifacts discovered at these sites included pottery, female terracotta figurines, and a jhāva (screen rubber). Based on the recovered artifacts, the time period of these sites is estimated to range from around 800 BCE to the early medieval period.

Publication Work –

  1. A documentation and a color booklet based on the historical significance of the state-protected monument Kusumvan Sarovar, Gokul, Mathura, have been published.
  2. A color folder based on the historical significance of the state-protected archaeological site, Rajdhani Teela, Maharajganj, has been printed.
  3. A report related to the village-level archaeological survey conducted in the Mehdawal development block of Sant Kabir Nagar district has been prepared.
  4. A report related to the village-level archaeological survey conducted in the Baberu tehsil of Banda district has been prepared.
  5. A report related to the village-level archaeological survey conducted in the Gohand development block of Hamirpur district has been prepared.

Major academic programmes in view of COVID-19 –

  • On the occasion of World Heritage Day (April 18, 2020), the Uttar Pradesh State Archaeology Directorate, Lucknow, organized an online painting competition based on the state's historical monuments and archaeological sites. Awards in the form of mementos and certificates were distributed to the winners.
  • On the occasion of World Heritage Day (April 18, 2020), the Regional Archaeology Unit, Varanasi, organized an online painting and photography competition based on the state's historical monuments and archaeological sites. Mementos and certificates were awarded to the winners.
  • On the occasion of World Heritage Day (April 18, 2020), the Regional Archaeology Unit, Jhansi, organized an online painting competition based on the state's historical monuments and archaeological sites. Mementos and certificates were awarded to the winners.
  • As part of the Van Mahotsav (July 1–7, 2020), the Uttar Pradesh State Archaeology Directorate, Lucknow, organized a tree planting program at the Chhatra Manzil complex. Cash prizes and certificates were awarded to the participants.
  • On the occasion of Water Week (July 16–22, 2020), the Uttar Pradesh State Archaeology Directorate, Lucknow, organized an online poster competition.
  • Under the Chief Minister's social media portal, the departmental Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube channels are being managed.
